Area Updates

We've got a couple of updates from around the area as we begin the final week of July.

First, Naugatuck finalized its game with East Longmeadow (Mass.) and it will be played on Friday, Sept. 16, at East Longmeadow High at 7 p.m. For any of you hoping that Naugatuck and Seymour would find a way to drop their Week 1 opponents to play again, that won't be the case. Naugy is locked into this game and Seymour has already said it would play Putnam if the tech schools lose football.

Second, this week (July 25-29) is the first session of the University of New Haven team camp. I know Woodland will be there this week along with some other area schools, I'm sure. The second session is next week. If anyone will be attending parts of the camp or the scrimmages at the end of the week, feel free to post some reports.

Third, if you come from a school that will be having any events (fundraisers, etc.) over the rest of the summer and they would like them publicized, feel free to drop us a line and we'll be happy to post something.

Finally, Mark Jaffee at the Rep-Am has done early previews and updates of local teams on the Red Zone blog. All of the links to these previews are located in the team previews box in the right sidebar.

We hope everyone's enjoying their summer and staying cool. Just a few weeks before practice starts!

Summer Camps, Passing Leagues

July and early August are the popular times for summer football camps and passing leagues, and a good number of NVL teams are participating in either or both.

We've heard reports from several of our bloggers regarding the performances of local teams in the passing leagues. While passing leagues certainly don't directly translate into success with the seven-on-seven setting, they definitely tell us something about the skill players and potential passing attacks, as well as the secondaries of our local teams. Feel free to keep those reports coming.

There are also a number of summer camps that have already happened and will be happening soon. Perhaps the most notable camp on the schedule is the University of New Haven team camp, scheduled for Aug. 1-5 from 5:30-9 p.m. all week. Usually there are several local teams that attend this camp and it's a favorite of some of our bloggers to watch.

Remmy and I hope everyone is enjoying their summer so far. It's just over a month from now until fall practice starts, so it's not that far off. We'll have more threads coming as we move through the summer before we hit the time for season predictions.

Ansonia's Dobbs talks about his HS career, UConn

I caught up with Montrell Dobbs after the Fairfield County vs. New Haven County All-Star game in West Haven. Fairfield topped New Haven by a score of 34-14 behind outstanding play from St. Joseph quarterback Joe DellaVecchia. Cadets teammate Tyler Matakevich also had an outstanding game on both offense and defense for Fairfield County.

Dobbs finished with 11 carries for 31 yards and three receptions for 17 yards.

NVL participants for New Haven County included Naugatuck's Ruben Berger, Wilby's Robert Williams, Sacred Heart's Rohan Ifill, Ansonia's Montrell Dobbs, Woodland's Ian Bures, and Derby's Zach Salazar.

Photos of the NVL, Shelton, and Oxford players can be seen on our Facebook page.

West Haven coach Ed McCarthy will lead the New Haven County All-Stars while St. Joseph coach Joe DellaVecchia will head the Fairfield County All-Stars. Tickets are $7 at the gate but can be ordered in advance for $5 by emailing New Haven Football Foundation President Bill O'Brien at obrienwt@comcast.net. Check out both teams' full rosters here.

Hopefully the New Haven All-Stars can come out with another win, as they've always done well in this game in the past. I know a few of the bloggers will be at this one, so we'll look forward to hearing your thoughts and reactions.
